Back to Roots Distributes Toto Language Books in Totopara

The Toto tribe is one of the world’s smallest indigenous communities. They live in Totopara village in West Bengal, India, and speak Toto, a language that is endangered and at risk of disappearing.

When a language fades, a community loses its stories, its songs, its ways of seeing the world, and the thread that connects one generation to the next. For a community as small as the Toto, that risk is very real.

Our Initiative

Back to Roots has taken the initiative to protect and preserve the Toto community’s rich culture, faith, and endangered language for future generations.

As part of this effort, we recently distributed Toto language books in Totopara. These books put the Toto language in the hands of the community itself, especially children and young learners, so that the language is learned, read, and spoken at home.

Why This Matters

  • Language is identity. Toto is central to the community’s culture and faith.

  • Children are the future of any language. When young people can learn their mother tongue, it has a chance to live on.

  • Small communities need support. Preservation works best when it is done with the community, respecting its voice and traditions.

Join Us

This distribution is one step in a longer journey. Culture and language can only be saved if many people care, so we invite you to follow our work, share this story, and stand with the Toto community.

Together, let’s take our language and culture back to their roots.
